Paper Lantern

The Mid-Autumn Festival in Chinese culture is a celebration that begins on the 15thday of the 8thmonth on the Chinese Lunar calendar.  It is the second grandest festival in China after the Chinese New Year.  This year the festival falls on Friday, 13thSeptember.

This festival marks another occasion where family and friends come together to celebrate.  During this time, people eat moon cakes, traditional Chinese pastries filled with a sweet paste.

Moon cakes

Moon cakes are often given to family members as gifts as a show of honour and respect. The sharing and eating of round moon cakes among family members during the festival symbolises the completeness and unity of families.

As part of the celebration, many families also set up lanterns to make the surroundings look more festive.

Let’s join in the celebration by making your own paper lantern.
